The Weight of a Name
They called her Guardian before she knew what the word meant
The City was never quiet. Every corridor carried a story. Some were ordinary—vendors arguing over prices, workers complaining about shifts, families making plans for tomorrow. Others were about war. Those were harder to ignore. She wandered through the bazaar listening to them all, still trying to understand the world she had been resurrected into. Guardians passed on their way to Banshee. Others returned from the Wilds with dust on their armor and fresh reports for the Vanguard.
Everyone seemed to know what they were doing. She did not. She had been alive for only a few days. No missions. No victories. No reason, she thought, for anyone to look at her differently. Then two members of the City militia passed by. One stopped.
"Guardian."
He saluted.
She hesitated before returning it. The word followed her everywhere. Guardian. Civilians said it with relief. Soldiers said it with respect. Other Lightbearers used it as though she had already earned it. She had not. Not yet. At least, that was what she believed.
To the people without the Light, the distinction did not seem to matter. A Lightbearer standing between the City and whatever waited beyond its walls was already a Guardian. She wasn't sure if that comforted her.
Eventually, her steps carried her toward the Courtyard. Beyond it stretched the City skyline. Above everything hung the Traveler. Fractured. Silent. Watching. The Old Tower stood in the distance, scarred by a battle she could not remember.
She had awakened only days earlier, beneath the Moon and beneath that broken sphere. That same night, the City held a funeral. Someone important had died. Someone connected to the Vanguard. Ikora had not told her much. Perhaps she thought it kinder that way.
The questions came anyway.
What happened here? Who attacked the City? Why was I brought back now? Why not before? Whose funeral was it?
Only proof that, once, someone had cared enough to leave something behind. She closed her fingers around it.
"You'd tell me what happened here if you were here, wouldn't you?"
The Traveler gave no answer. Neither did the pendant. The sun sank beyond the City. For now, she had only questions.
