Foreword
My fellow Guardians,
Destiny is a game that has meant more to me than I ever could have expected when I first stepped into its world. Over the years, it became far more than something I simply played. It became a place filled with memories, friendships, victories, frustrations, late nights, and moments that I will carry with me long after the servers eventually go dark.
Some of the closest friendships in my life began because of this game. I even met my best friend through Destiny, someone who would eventually give me the incredible privilege of becoming the godfather of his daughter. That alone is something I never could have imagined when I first picked up a controller and created my Guardian.
This project began as something much smaller. At first, I simply wanted to preserve the story of my own Guardian. Destiny gives us an enormous universe, but so much of what makes that universe special exists between the lines. Our Guardians have histories that are never written into quest logs. They have friendships, losses, triumphs, failures, rivalries, and quiet moments that exist only in our imaginations and in the memories we have made while playing. I wanted to give those stories a place to exist.
What began as an attempt to document one Guardian's journey quickly became something far larger than I could have imagined. Messages started arriving from other members of the community. Some wanted to share stories they had been carrying for years. Others had characters, fireteams, Ghosts, weapons, and moments they wanted to see preserved somewhere beyond their own headcanon. Before long, I found myself surrounded by stories from Guardians I had never met, each one representing a small piece of someone's relationship with this universe.
There were difficult decisions about what could fit, where each story belonged, and how wildly different entries could still feel like parts of the same anthology. Not every story followed the same format. Some were deeply personal. Some were tragic. Some were funny. Some were about legendary battles, while others focused on a single quiet moment between two characters. But that difference became part of what made the project special. There is no single way to be a Guardian. There is no single Destiny story. This book is an attempt to preserve just a few of them.
Every entry represents someone who cared enough about this world to imagine what existed beyond the screen. Together, they form a small record of the creativity, passion, and connection that has always existed within this community. And so this book is dedicated to the people who made their voices heard. To everyone who refused to let something they loved disappear quietly. To everyone who spoke up, created, shared, argued, remembered, and reminded the world just how much this universe meant to them.
Over the past several months, the Destiny community showed once again that it is capable of being something remarkable. Whatever the future of this franchise may be, that passion is now part of its history.
You stood tall.
You did not go quietly.
And you reminded everyone of something Guardians have understood from the beginning:
Guardians make their own fate.
This book is for you.
