The Son's Shadow

The dead leave more than bones

It began as something ordinary.

A Guardian's weapon.

Steel, polymer, circuitry. Built by human hands to survive human wars.

Then the Hive found it.

They did not destroy it.

They changed it.

The weapon was hollowed out and remade according to a logic that had nothing to do with engineering. Something of Crota's brood was worked into its frame. Something hungry.

What returned was called the Husk of the Pit.

It was barely a weapon anymore.

More relic than rifle. More wound than machine.

Yet it still fired.

And when it killed Hive, it changed. The Husk drank deeply of the things it was turned against. Each death fed it. Each kill carried it further from the weapon it had once been.

Eventually, the Husk became something else.

Eidolon Ally.

The shape was more refined.

The hunger was not.

Its transformation was not complete.

The weapon still wanted more.

Power gathered around Crota.

His throne.

His brood.

His Oversoul.

His death.

The same legacy that had twisted the weapon in the first place became the final thing required to remake it. When the transformation ended, little remained of the rifle that had once belonged to a Guardian. What emerged was called Necrochasm. It carried the curse of the Hive in its body. Death did not end at the point of impact. Victims ruptured in violent bursts of cursed energy, their destruction spreading outward like the final convulsion of a Thrall that had been taught how to become a weapon. The Hive had taken something born beneath the Sky and dragged it into the Deep.

Then the Light took it back. Not purified. Not cleansed. Reclaimed.

A weapon fashioned in Crota's shadow now turned against the creatures that had made it. There was a cruelty in that. Perhaps even a kind of blasphemy.

The Sword Logic demanded that the weak be consumed by the strong. Necrochasm had survived every hand that tried to define what it should become. Human. Hive. Relic. Weapon. It remained. And so did the name behind it.

Crota. Son of Oryx. Prince of the Hive. Dead.

But death had never meant silence among the Ascendant Hive.

A throne could be broken. A son could fall. A legacy could pass into enemy hands. And somewhere beyond the Moon, beyond the worlds of men, beyond the thin walls separating the material from the Ascendant—

a father had already heard enough.
