Marathon in Destiny

What this book is about
This book traces the threads connecting Destiny to Marathon, Bungie's earlier series. You'll read about the MIDA weapons, which share a name with Marathon's revolutionary MIDA movement, and about Destiny 1's scout rifle Fate of All Fools, whose name likely echoes a line the AI Durandal carves into a moon in Marathon 2.
It then turns to Destiny 2's 30th Anniversary and the paraverse, the parallel realities Xûr says Starhorse gathered treasures from. That's Destiny's own explanation for rewards like the Wastelander M5 shotgun and Marathon-themed ornaments. The book is careful to separate this from fan theory.
The last section covers the 2026 Marathon release on Tau Ceti IV and how Bungie has kept it apart from Destiny as a sibling franchise. It ends with the Destiny 2 cosmetics that marked the launch, including a Ghost shell whose lore holds a small mystery of its own.
MIDA and the Marathon
Destiny's MIDA weapons share their name with the revolutionary MIDA movement from Bungie's Marathon. In the MIDA Multi-Tool's lore Zavala jokes that it stands for "Mars Is Damnably Arid", and the MIDA Mini-Tool's lore is dated one day after the colony ship UESC Marathon left Mars in Marathon's timeline.
Destiny 1's scout rifle Fate of All Fools likely takes its name from Marathon 2, where the AI Durandal carves "the just fate of fools" into a moon after destroying the AI Tycho. Destinypedia notes both of these links; Bungie hasn't spelled them out.
