The 30th Anniversary

Destiny 2's 30th Anniversary in December 2021 introduced the paraverse: many parallel realities, which overlap in Eternity. Xûr says Starhorse brought him treasures from across the paraverse, and that's where his Treasure Hoard's rewards come from, among them Marathon-themed armor ornaments, the Wastelander M5 shotgun, based on Marathon 2's WSTE-M5, and Halo's Forerunner.

So Destiny's own explanation for these nods is that they come from other realities. No Destiny text names Marathon, Tau Ceti or Durandal as one of them, and Bungie treats Marathon as a separate franchise, so reading Marathon's universe as one of the paraverse's realities is a fan interpretation, not something the lore states.
